October 14, 2013 (San Diego) Reports are coming in from the Philippines that the southern island of Bohol was hit with a magnitude 7.2 earthquake this evening, according to the United States Geological Service.  At least 20 people have died, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council.

According to Earthquake report, this was a shallow earthquake, which has caused building collapse, including the main church in Bohol, with Mindanao affected as well. USGS has a notice that due to the shut down, operation are at a minimum.

Earthquake Report has an ongoing blog with updates from the field:  http://earthquake-report.com/2013/10/15/very-strong-earthquake-mindanao-philippines-on-october-15-2013/

It is very early in the incident, so reports have to be taken with a grain of salt, and also we will have to wait for rescue teams and media teams to get into the disaster zone. As rescue and recovery move on, we will know more.

For those who have family in the affected area, if you have not been able to make contact with them, one service you can use is the American Red Cross Family Reunification Service. It might go slow, since they will have to send messages to their counterparts in the Phillipines, but that is a definite resource. For US Citizens, the Embassy and the Consulates also serve as information points in disasters. The latter, expect it to be a tad slow due to the Government Shutdown.
