August 5, 2011(Escondido)-- The San Diego County Board of Supervisors this week unanimously approved the acquisition of four properties needed to complete the widening of Bear Valley Parkway in unincorporated Escondido, between Boyle Avenue and Highway 78.
To date, the County has negotiated real property contracts to acquire or use 31 of the 50 properties that will be needed to complete the project. This week's vote follows approvals given earlier this year to proceed with property acquisitions and relocation of homeowners displaced by the widening project.
Chairman Bill Horn said, “Reducing congestion on our roads is a huge priority for us, and Bear Valley Parkway is a vital road for residents of Escondido and Valley Center trying to get to Interstate 15.”
The County’s recent progress follows similar efforts by the City of Escondido, which recently undertook its own widening efforts on a portion of Bear Valley Parkway it owns to the north of the County project area. Once completed, the County-owned portion of Bear Valley will be four lanes wide, with a center median, bicycle lane, and sidewalk. It will connect to the existing four lane segment in Escondido and eliminate the bottleneck that exists today.
“I think this is a great example of intergovernmental cooperation,” said Chairman Horn. “We both recognized the congestion on Bear Valley was a problem that required a two-government solution. I’m glad we’re acquiring the right-of-way to get this done.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2012 and is expected to be completed within two years.
