May 22, 2015 (San Diego)--The College Area Business District is celebrating the installation of its first bike corral located in front of the Living Room Coffeehouse, 5900 El Cajon Boulevard. The bike corral opened May 20th and a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held May 27th at 10 a.m. with refreshments.

After a few short weeks of planning and coordinating with the owner of the Living Room Coffeehouse, Beat Wick and City of San Diego’s Bicycle Program manager Tom Landre, the bike corral installation marks the beginning of creating a more pedestrian and bicycle friendly Business District along San Diego’s famed El Cajon Boulevard. “One thing is for certain,”, said Jim Schneider, Executive Director for the College Area Business District, “businesses become more viable if we can slow down the velocity at which people travel along El Cajon Boulevard by giving them access to safe, secure bike and pedestrian infrastructure”.

Making the College Area Business District more pedestrian and bike friendly is quite a task with the main traveling artery being El Cajon Boulevard.  Automobile traffic travels at a fast pace, generally well above the speed limit of 35 miles an hour,  making it dangerous for vehicles, and even more dangerous for pedestrian and bike traffic. While this impediment is ominous, the College Area Business District will forge ahead with doing all they can to reduce the dangers and promote walking and bike travel to the over 450 businesses it represents.

The Bike Corral installation coincides with May being National Bike Month. With many cyclists throughout San Diego, The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, Bike SD and Circulate San Diego have partnered up with SANDAG’s iCommute  Program to promotes Bike Month’s activities which culminate with the rain-delayed Bike to Work Day May 29, 2015 and Bike SD’s Bike Month Bash at the Lafayette Hotel on May 30th.

The College Area Business District fully understands the benefits of promoting pedestrian and bike traffic to the over 450-business district. In the coming months, you will notice more bike racks and now the first of what they hope to be many Bike Corrals.

A Bike Coral, for those who may not know, is a space in the street near a busy business or group of businesses where 12 bicycles can be parked in the same amount of space it takes to park one car. It’s easy to see that a bike corral can increase the number of people that can park near a business which can be very good for that business. It is also great for the neighborhood by reducing the number of cars on the roads and reducing the strain on limited automobile parking spaces.
