August 5, 2012 (San Diego)—An overdose of prescription drugs caused the death of Barzeen Barzanji, 20, a Santee resident found dead in a fraternity house at San Diego State University on April 20, 2012.  Following testing, the County Medical Examiner has now concluded that acute oxycodone and alprazolam intoxication  were responsible.

The drugs are commonly prescribed for pain and anxiety. According to a recent report issued by the Medical examiner, prescription drug deaths rose 27% locally last year.

Barzanji, a criminal justice major at SDSU, was also president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. His body was found in the Phi Beta Kappa fraternity house.

He had attended party on campus the night before and was found unresponsive at the frat house the next morning.  Officers and medics responded to a 911 call, but death was confirmed without medical intervention.  SDSU campus police conducted the investigation.
