August 6, 2024 (Spring Valley) – The Spring Valley Community Church has agreed to lease parking lot space to the County to serve as a safe parking place for homeless people. Supervisors have voted to approve the measure, but on August 7 at 7 p.m, the church’s pastor will hold a question and answer forum for the public.
The church is located at 3310 Bancroft Drive, Spring Valley. A tour will be provided and questions are welcome.
Some community members have raised concerns over why the project was voted upon without holding a public forum first. A similar issue raised in Lemon Grove where sleeping cabins for homeless individuals were approved by Supervisors before any community forum was held. A larger sleeping cabin project was also approved at a separate location in Spring Valley, but was later cancelled after public objections over proximity to sensitive locations.
Homelessness has risen sharply in East County over the past year, including Spring Valley.
