October 17, 2017 (San Diego) – The County of San Diego has released a map showing the number of Hepatitis A cases by zip code.

By far the largest share of the county’s 490 cases have occurred in San Diego’s 92101 zip code, which has had 81 people diagnosed.   But cases have been diagnosed across the region, and some East County communities have high clusters of the contagious illness.

El Cajon’s 92020 and 02021 zip codes have had 29 and 18 cases, respectively.  In La Mesa, the 91941 and 91942 zip codes have had 4 and 7 cases.  Santee’s 92071 zip code has 9 cases listed, while Spring Valley’s 91977 has 6 cases.

There are clusters in some coastal communities, with isolated cases in areas as far-flung as Ramona and Descanso.

Both San Diego County and the State of California have declared emergencies due to the Hepatitis A epidemic, which has been spread primarily through the homeless population and drug users.  Vaccinations are recommended for these at-risk populations and anyone who comes into contact with them.

Thus far, 18 deaths and 342 hospitalizations have resulted from the Hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego County, leading communities to take actions such as opening public restrooms, power-washing streets and sidewalks, cleaning up homeless encampments and making efforts to get homeless people into temporary or long-term shelters.
