April 24, 2019 (El Cajon) -- El Cajon’s City Council will be choosing a new Councilmember to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Ben Kalasho.

The Council will make its decision at its regularly scheduled May 14th meeting.

As of April 23rd, 14 candidates have applied.  They include former mayor Mark Lewis, Planning Commissioner Phil Ortiz, IT manager and former Council candidate George Glover, fair housing and Latino rights advocate Estela de los Rios and more.

The Council opted to fill the seat by appointment instead of holding a special election to save on costs.

But the decision has generated some controversy.  De los Rios has said that she believes a special election should have been held to assure that voters can choose the next councilperson, rather than leaving the decision to the all-white, all male, and all Republican councilmembers.

If you are interested in applying for the seat, you can pick up an application at El Cajon’s City Hall during business hours.  The deadline is 4:30 p.m. on April 26th.
