November 1, 2017 (El Cajon) – El Cajon resident Darius Demon Lake, 27, is under arrest for suspicion of committing eight bank robberies in San Diego County and one in Temecula, Walt Miller with the El Cajon Police Department reports.  A second suspect, Brian Lee Barkley, also of El Cajon, was arrested for participating in one of three El Cajon bank heists.  “During that robbery, physical evidence was left by both suspects linking them to the robberies,” Miller says.

The crime spring began on October 5, 2017 with a bank robbery in El Cajon.  The suspect gained the name “Chameleon” by the FBI’s Joint Bank Robbery Task Force and the San Diego Violent Crimes Task force, due to changing his appearance in subsequence robberies

Arrest warrants were then issued for both men. An El Cajon officer on patrol recognized one of the suspects in the area of Main and Mollison and took him into custody. Later in the evening and El Cajon detective recognized the individual called the Chameleon Bandit in the area of 900 E. Madison. The suspect went into an apartment, exited the apartment a short while later and got into a vehicle being driven by another individual. El Cajon officers stopped that vehicle and the suspect was taken into custody. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving on a suspended license and booked into jail. At this time, he is not believed to be involved in the robbery series.

No weapons were seen at any of the robberies, however demands were made by the suspects causing the employees of the banks to give the men cash. The arrests were made on October 29th and 30th.

Both suspects were booked into San Diego County Jail for robbery.
