April 20, 2010 (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Congressman Bob asked President Barack Obama today to grant California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s request for a Federal Disaster Declaration that would help make funds available for Imperial County to rebuild after the April 4 quake that shook the valley.

“Assistance from FEMA is critical for my constituents!” wrote Filner (D-Chula Vista) whose district includes portions of San Diego’s East County as well as Imperial County. “I ask that full and speedy consideration be extended to the state's request, so that I am able to do all I can to assist my constituents in the recovery process.”

The 7.2 earthquake that struck Mexico and numerous major aftershocks centered in Imperial County and Mexico have caused substantial damage to homes, businesses, water storage and other infrastructure in Imperial County, Filner’s letter observed.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, governors may request supplemental Federal assistance under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.
