July 4, 2015 (La Mesa) – A two-alarm fire 8420 Buckland Street in La Mesa on Friday morning started in a kitchen and caused $325,000 in damages to three apartment units and the contents, Heartland Fire reports.

The call came in at 8:20 a.m. reporting the blaze. Heartland crews  responded to find heavy, black smoke and flames billowing forth from two rental units on the second story, so a second alarm was issued.

Aggressive action by Heartland Firefighters from the Cities of La Mesa and El Cajon, with assistance from the San Diego Fire Department, had the fire knocked down in 20 minutes.

Three apartment units were heavily damaged, two additional units sustained smoke and water damage.  Due to the damage caused by the fire, S.D. G. & E. turned off the power to all 12 units of this complex, displacing those occupants until a building inspector can deem the building safe.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the apartment manager in finding temporary housing for those displaced by the fire.

No injuries were reported.
