January 26, 2012 (San Diego) – If you or your kids love surfing or swimming in the ocean, now may not be the best time to hit the beach. A great white shark was spotted by surfers off Imperial Beach Tuesday by surfers, including one who photographed the dorsal fin with his cell phone camera.
The shark, identified by the nonprofit Shark Research Committee, is estimated to be about 16 to 18 feet long, KPBS reports. The news prompted shark warning signs to be posted.
Rare in the San Diego area, great white sharks are the largest members of the shark family and have been responsible for fatal attacks on swimmers and surfers in other areas.
