February 2, 2012 (La Mesa) -- Helix Charter High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Chapter invites parents to a party at which large doses of reality will be served. On Thursday, February 9, the group will host a Reality Party for parents.

The Reality Party is the product of Straight Up Reality Improv, a non-profit group that engages youth in advocacy to reduce underage and binge drinking. The group simulates a teen drinking party and invites parents to tour the location at which the party is taking place (no alcohol will be served). Students from Helix’s SADD group will take part as “attendees” for the party. The events that take place at the party are loosely scripted, and the teens participating in the event act out different roles based on the guidelines of the script.

The tours will run from 4:00 – 9:00 pm, with a tour running every half an hour. The students in Helix’s SADD Chapter would like to provide this experience to not just Helix families, but to the entire community, as the issues being addressed are universal. The Reality Party Tours are provided at no charge, are open to parents only, and a reservation is required. The Party will take place in La Mesa; the specific location will be provided when a reservation is made. Please click here to make your reservation.

The event is designed to expose the underage and binge drinking culture; many adults view drinking as a rite of passage, but are not aware of how much things have changed since they were teens. The Reality Party allows them to see what today’s parties are like to raise awareness of what teens are facing in these social settings. Parents will also hear suggestions for how they can help change the culture and keep their kids safe.

“Some parents believe there’s not much they can do. They are just told to talk to their teens,” says Straight Up Project Director Katherine Kasmir. “A better understanding of the specific issues teens are dealing with today, and the culture of risky behaviors, will allow parents to have more relevant and meaningful dialogue with their teens, to set clear expectations and implement family policies that help keep their teens safe.”

Event attendees are also invited to take part in a discussion following their tour. The discussion panel will include teens, law enforcement, educators, mental health professionals, and others to field questions and facilitate discussion.

This is the second year Helix’s SADD Chapter has hosted this event. Last year’s event was very well- attended, and was one of the many events hosted by the group to help them earn the 2010-11 SADD National Chapter of the Year.

Helix’s SADD Chapter is generously sponsored by DCH Honda of Lemon Grove. DCH helps to sponsor activities and meetings, helps with fund raising, and provides the opportunity for advisors and student officers to attend the SADD National Convention in the summer. SADD is a national organization that was started in Massachusetts in the 1980s. The main focus is “students helping students make positive decisions about challenges in their everyday lives.”
