February 11, 2017 (El Cajon) – A pedestrian struck by a vehicle on February 3 has been identified as William Settles, 56, an East County resident. He remains hospitalized in critical condition.

El Cajon Police and paramedics responded to a call reporting the accident shortly before 11 p.m. in the 1500 block of East Main Street, where they found Settles lying in the westbound lanes, unconscious.  He was transported to a hospital.

Police indicate that Settles was crossing outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by a Toyota pickup truck. The driver remained on scene and has been fully cooperative with the investigation, according to police; drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors.

The El Cajon Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding this collision to call (619) 579-3311.  Police also remind those who walk at night to obey all traffic control devices, only cross the street at designated, controlled intersections, and wear bright or light colored clothing for visibility.

For those driving vehicles during hours of darkness, please pay extra attention to the roadway and be aware of pedestrians that may be entering the roadway to cross.

The El Cajon Police Department wishes to thank all those who assisted with the identification of Settles, whose identity was unknown until February 9th.
