August 25, 2012 (El Cajon)-- Heartland Fire & Rescue crews responded to reports of a structure fire in El Cajon at 11:13 a.m.. Firefighters found the home engulfed with flames and heavy smoke coming from the windows of the house, located at 612 Alderson Street.

Quick action by fire crews had the fire knocked down in less than 15 minutes, keeping the fire from reaching nearby homes. An elderly man, 87, the lone occupant, was able to escape and is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The kitchen is considered a total loss. Damage to the home and contents has been estimated at $50,000.  Cause of the fire is under investigation, but the fire appears to have started in the kitchen area, possibly electrical in nature.

There were no injuries.  Firefighters from the San Miguel Fire Protection District also assisted in putting out the blaze.
