March 20, 2018 (La Mesa) – By a unanimous vote, La Mesa’s City Council voted on March 13th to adopt a climate action plan.  The vote drew cheers from members of San Diego350, a nonprofit that has been advocating for cities to take action to combat climate change.

The landmark plan, which has been nearly three years in the making, aims to reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions and commit to 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2035. La  Mesa is the sixth city in San Diego County to adopt a climate action plan, and the first in East County, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The plan includes two dozen components including a community choice energy program, energy-efficient building retrofits, planting shade trees, solar heating, transit-oriented mixed-use developments that are friendly to bikes and pedestrians, water-wise landscaping, a construction and demolition waste diversion program, and an urban forest master plan.

More than half – 58 percent – of the city’s green house gas emissions came from transportation, with most of the rest – 38 percent – from energy usage.

Next up, the city will consider a feasibility study on a community choice energy option for residents and businesses, in which a nonprofit government entity would obtain electric power primarily from solar and wind energy for La Mesans.  The community choice option alone could reduce La Mesa’s greenhouse gas emissions by 32 percent by 2035, according to the newly adopted Climate Action Plan.
