September 26 – On Thursday, September 29, San Diego’s Civilized Conversation Club will hold an open forum titled “To Fix the Economy, We Must…?” The long-time community discussion group meets each Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Filter Coffee House, 4096 30th St. in San Diego (map). According to the club’s leader, David Genser of Poway, Civilized Conversation was formed because “It’s hard to find open, respectful discussions of controversial topics, especially in today’s political climate."

He added, "It’s important for people to have a place to go where they can exchange opinions and information on important issues.”

The non-partisan club covers a wide range of issues related to politics, public affairs, and even religion and philosophy. Recent discussion topics have included, “The importance of the United Nations,” “The news media: Watchdog or lapdog?” and “Budget deficits – who should sacrifice?”

He added that most of the group’s weekly meetings attract 15-20 people and sometimes feature guest speakers and introductory presentations by regular group members.

Genser will open Thursday’s meeting with a short presentation on some of the major proposals to help our economic recovery and the obstacles they face. Her is a former congressional aid and a graduate of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Other upcoming topics at Civilized Conversation include:
·         October  6 – Understanding Buddhism
·         October 13 – Should we change the basic rules for how we elect our politicians?
·         October 20 – Do we need a value added tax?
·         October 27 – How should Congress’ “Super Committee” cut the budget deficit?
