January 20, 2016 (Alpine) — At the El Cajon Courthouse this week, Navy Corpsman Brett Brown entered a not guilty plea to charges of murder and child abuse. He is accused of killing his gilfriend’s 19-year-old son.

On January 11th, Sheriff’s deputies responded to an emergency call and found the boy, Lucas Orlando, gravely injured at the couple’s apartment in Alpine. Brown, who was watching the toddler along with two of his own children while his girlfriend was at work, told authorities that Lucas was injured in a fall.

Paramedics transported the boy to Rady Children’s Hospital, where he died of his injuries two days later.

A prosecutor told Judge Patricia Cookson that the child suffered multiple skull fractures a well as broken arm and leg bones that had been healing. The boy also had bruises on his body, Times of San Diego reports.

If convicted, Brown, 29, could face up to 25 years in prison.
