December 11, 2014 (Lakeside) – Many of our readers have asked us where to find locally made cheeses. At last, we’ve found a source! Van Ommering Dairy in Lakeside has announced that starting in 2015, this family-owned farm will begin making artisan, farmstead cheese.  In addition, a cheese club, special events and creamery tours will be offered.

FEDS SEIZE PROPERTY OF POTRERO RANCHER CONVICTED OF ALIEN SMUGGLING

December 12, 2014 (Potrero) – A federal jury yesterday has convicted Potrero resident Kala Rains, 47, on seven counts of conspiracy and alien smuggling.  The ranch used by Rains and co-conspirators to harbor undocumented immigrants should be forfeited to the U.S. government, jurors determined following a trial before Judge Anthony Battaglia.

GANG MEMBERS INDICTED FOR SEX TRAFFICKING OF EAST COUNTY SCHOOL GIRLS

December 11, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)—U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy today revealed that 22 alleged gang members and associates are charged in a federal grand jury indictment with participating in a racketeering conspiracy involving the cross-country sex trafficking of underage girls, including many who were recruited from East County middle and high schools.

December 11, 2014 (El Cajon )—“There’s a good chance that our police officers saved the lives of four kids today,” Councilman Gary Kendrick told East County Magazine, reflecting on the dramatic rescue of the  children for whom an Amber Alert had been issued. The body of their mother had been found in another vehicle and their abductor was their father, who was believed to be armed and dangerous.

EL CAJON MOVES FORWARD ON POLICE BODY CAMERAS

December 11, 2014 (El Cajon ) – By a 5-0 vote, El Cajon’s City Council voted Tuesday to have a study done on the feasibility of body cameras for the city’s police force.

Councilman Gary Kendrick, author of the proposal, told East County Magazine that his research found body cameras elsewhere have reduced complaints against police officers by 80% and that assaults against police officers went down 57%.

AMBER ALERT SUSPECT DANIEL PEREZ TAKEN INTO CUSTODY; CHILDREN SAFE

 

December 11, 2014 (Santee) – Amber Alert suspect Daniel Perez was taken into custody this morning following a chase across East County, with his four children safe. According to CHP, Daniel Perez, 43, of Montebello, and his four sons was in his 2014 Toyota Camry and stopped on the onramp from State Route 52 to Highway 67 in Santee by barricades.

WET WEATHER AHEAD, SNOW IN HIGHER MOUNTAIN AREAS

December 9, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) - A Pacific storm is predicted to bring more rain and cooler temperatures late this week. The National Weather Service is forecasting up to three inches of rain in mountains, with lower levels in valleys, deserts and coastal areas.  In addition, winds up to 50 miles an hour are expected, along with up to several inches of snow at elevations over 5,500 feet.

TORTURE REPORT DRAWS FIRE

December 9, 2014 (Washington D.C.) --California Senator Dianne Feinstein, chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has released a 500-page executive summary of  the committee’s report on enhanced interrogation techniques used by the CIA after the 9/11 attacks. Those treatments on 119 suspects amounted to torture in some cases, said Senator Feinstein, who concludes that the CIA’s actions a decade ago are “a stain on our values and on our history.”

December 7, 2014 (La Mesa) – East County Magazine sat down recently with Marissa Grace McRoberts, a 12-year-old singing sensation from East County who made her debut on the KYXY Jeff and Jer show. You can also hear an excerpt of her song, "In My Dreams."

She has performed at Oktoberfest in La Mesa, at Grossmont Center concerts, at La Mesa's Craft Brew & Wine Festival earlier this month, and will sing solo later this month at Petco Park.

SOLAR POWER INSTALLATIONS SOAR ACROSS U.S.

December 9, 2014 (Washington D.C.)--Installation of solar photovoltaic energy in the United States grew 41 percent last year – with 1,354 megawatts added last year, the Solar Energy Industries Association reports.  The U.S. now has a whopping 16.1 gigawatts of photovoltaic, plus another 1.4 gigawatts of concentrating solar power capacity.

VIEJAS TOY DRIVE "BIG REVEAL" DEC. 10

 

December 9, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - Viejas has been working to raise 14,000 toys for the local Salvation Army’s East County Toy Drive toy drive to help families in need across our region.  Last year, Viejas collected over 12,000 toys and this year they are hoping to break that record with help from tribal members, employees at the Viejas Casino and Resort, and hundreds of local residents.
