Donations sought for memorial fund to benefit new high school

August 6, 2010 (Alpine)-- Barbara Lowe, resident of Alpine, passed away on July 31, 2010 due to complications from liver cancer and Crohn’s Disease. She was  the secretary for the Alpine High School Citizen’s Committee and an executive committee member for the past three years.

“Her commitment to seeing this local Alpine High School built, largely for her Alpine resident grandchildren to attend, had become just one of her many reasons she fought her disease with desire and dignity,” said Bill Weaver, chair of the Committee. “She loved her family and friends dearly.”

Her son, Jeff Lowe, hopes to see his mother’s efforts commemorated. “I would really like to see my mom's name on some part of the new high school,” he said in an e-mail posted at the AHSCC site. “She devoted a great deal of time over the past few years to making it happen, despite being sick. She sometimes went to board meetings straight from chemo appointments or hospital stays.”

She is survived by her husband Richard Hoverstock, her three children, Jeff Lowe, Stacey Perkins (who also resides in Alpine), Erica Hironimus and her grandchildren.

“Barbara’s wishes were that in lieu of flowers, you make a donation to the charity of your choice,” said Weaver, who suggests that n appropriate choice would be donations to the Alpine Education Foundation in Lowe’s name. “Request that your donation be set aside for the 12th high school, in honor of Barbara Lowe,” suggested Weaver, who pledged, “We will go before the GUHSD Governing Board to ask for the board's approval at their next meeting, on behalf of Barbara Lowe and her family, that these duly noted donated funds be utilized to honor this wonderful woman, as her family has wished for.”

He hopes the Board will approve the request, but added, “If not approved, the funds can still be used in the brick and mortar of the new 12th high school. Barbara will be proud, as her work for a local high school continues, and will represent her spirit!

The funeral for Lowe was held at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills on Aug. 3. A celebration of her life was held after the ceremony at the home of Martin and Susan Strassner.
