September 20, 2010 (Poway) – This Friday and Saturday September 24-25, the 38th annual Poway Rodeo evokes the spirit of our region's western heritage. Saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, bull riding, bareback riding, barrel racing and team roping are among the events showcasing skills that date back to the era of Spanish California ranchos. The annual roundup of cattle was a time for cowboys, or vaqueros, to display horsemanship and roping skills--skills that continue to thrill audiences today.

When railways replaced cattle drives as a means to carry livestock to market, “Wild West” shows such as those formed by Buffalo Bill Cody offered cowboys a way to earn a living. Since then, rodeos have become professional sporting events attracting national media coverage. For instance, more than 170,000 fans attended the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and more than 13 million viewers tuning into the finals on ESPN. Modern rodeos feature female as well as male competitors vying for top dollar prizes.
