H.R. 3590: PATIENT PROTECTION & AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
Status: Signed into law by President Obama
Description: Major health care reform bill passed by the House on March 21, 2010 by a vote of219-212 and signed into law by the President. It will expand health care coverage to 31 million currently uninsured Americans through a combination of cost controls, subsidies and mandates. It is estimated to cost $848 billion over a 10 year period, but would be fully offset by new taxes and revenues and would reduce the deficit by $131 billion over the same period. H.R. 4213: AMERICAN WORKERS, STATE AND BUSINESS RELIEF ACT
Status: Passed Senate 62-36 March 10, 2010; goes to House
Description: This bill would extend the filing deadline for existing tiers of unemployment benefits until Dec. 31, 2010. COBRA health care subsidies for the unemployed would also be extended. Other provisions in the bill include an extension of the current rate of Medicare payments to doctors and dozens of targeted tax cuts. The total cost of the bill is estimated at $140 billion, with $80 billion of that being for the extended unemployment benefits. None of the cost is offset with new revenues.
