SAFE LIGHT PROJECT PUTS SOLAR LIGHTING ON HOMES TO IMPROVE SAFETY

November 25, 2011 (San Diego) -- Councilmember Marti Emerald, Council President Tony Young, the San Diego Police Department and Rebuilding Together teamed to launch the “Safe Light Project” on November 22, beginning with the neighborhoods of Mt. Hope and Mountain View. The organizations are teaming with community volunteers to install solar lighting on homes in neighborhoods that lack adequate lighting.
“These lights will keep residents safe. Lighting makes walking after dark safer and has been shown to reduce crime,” says Councilmember Emerald, who chairs the City’s Public Safety Committee. “We plan to install about 80 solar lights on homes to test their effectiveness. If they cut crime and accidents, we plan to expand the program citywide,” explained Councilmember Emerald.
