December 13, 2015 (East County El Cajon) --The weekend of December 5th and 6th was the first annual Powerlifting competition to be put on here in San Diego County by the United States Powerlifting Association. The competition was hosted by Pivotal Sports Performance in El Cajon. Owner Andre Hernandez says that this was the first year they have put on an event here in San Diego and that it is being planned as an annual event in El Cajon.

The meet was capped at 60 lifters per day. Saturday's event was for women and for men up to 181  pounds. Sunday's event was for men over 180 pounds.

This was an exciting event. I was invited by my son-in-law, Frank Suchey, who had entered the event. I thought I would go down to watch for a bit and show my support.  Little did I know it was as exciting to watch as any sporting event I have attended.

Watching the powerlifters getting ready for their lift was fascinating. The focus was intense and you could feel the adrenaline in the air.  Each contestant seemed to have his own ritual to focus his effort to give his best – be it physical, vocal or mental.

I had a bit of bias pulling for my son-in-law, but was also rooting for 52-year old Michael Perrington – the  oldest member at the event. After the event, I told Michael I was pulling for him, being the elder statesman. He appreciated the support and said he’d been doing this since he was 16 years old.

If you exercise or workout on a regular bases I suggest you check out the powerlifting competition someday; if you are not much of an enthusiast of working out this event was fun to watch.

This was Frank’s first powerlifting contest and he placed second in his division. His close friend, Kaleb Moore, of Santee won first place in his division.

The second annual competition has already been scheduled for December 3rd and 4th of next year, 2016. Entry fee is $75.00, $35.00 for crossover into an additional category. Events are Full Power, Push/Pull, Bench only, and Deadlift only. Categories, Raw, Classic Raw, Single Ply, Multi Ply (bench or deadlift only).

Spectators were charged $5.00 entry fee. There was a good crowd turn out of at least 75 to 100 people at any one time.
