Nov. 23, 2009 (El Cajon) -  The County animal shelter seeks a good home for Juliet and Sweet Pea, a cat and kitten that have formed an inseparable bond while being nursed back to health from injuries.

In late spring, a Good Samaritan rescued a severely injured cat lying in the roadway  in Mission Valley and brought the cat to the County animal shelter. The cat, named Juliet by the Department’s veterinary staff, was found to have severe fractures to her front and rear legs. Despite the pain, Juliet would solicit attention by purring and reaching out to staff in the medical center. The cat’s extensive injuries required the skill of a veterinary orthopedic surgeon and Juliet was transferred to Dr. Nancy Hampel at the Animal Medical Center in El Cajon. The surgeon was able to pin the fractures and repair a diaphragmatic hernia that was later discovered when it was noticed that the cat was having breathing problems.

While Juliet was recuperating at the shelter from her surgery, an 8-week-old kitten that had also been struck by a car was brought into the medical center for care. Juliet immediately took this kitten under her paw and they have been inseparable ever since. The kitten, named Sweet Pea, is now Juliet’s best friend.

“These two felines have forged a unique bond and love to play and run around together,” said Dawn Danielson, Director of the County Department of Animal Services.

Because the cat and the kitten are now inseparable, the Department is seeking someone willing to adopt both cats, and who will promise to keep them indoors. Juliet is now completely healed but she has a permanent limp on her left front leg. The injury does not affect her and she is active, even with this limitation.

Animal lovers interested in adopting this unique pair should visit the County animal shelter located at 5480 Gaines St., San Diego. They will need to fill out an application and staff will select an adoptee based on being the best fit. For more information, visit http://www.sddac.com/index.asp.
