Makena Brocki’s walk-off double gives the Aztecs a 4-3 victory

March 25, 2023 (San Diego) - Makena Brocki’s two-out, walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Elianna Reyes to lift San Diego State to a 4-3 victory over Fresno State Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (17-10, 2-3 MW) evened the weekend series with the Bulldogs (11-17, 1-1 MW) with the win.
With the game tied at 3-3, Jade Ignacio hit a one-out double and was replaced by Reyes at second base. Shelby Denman relieved starter Taylor Gilmore in the circle and got Jeweliana Perez to fly out to left field for the second out of the inning. Brocki then took a 1-2 pitch to right-center field for a walk-off double to easily score Reyes and give SDSU the 4-3 win.
FS, which defeated San Diego State, 6-3, in the series opener on Friday, took early lead in the top of the second inning when Keahilele’s single scored a pair of runs. It appeared that Aztec right fielder AJ Murphy caught the ball, but an umpired ruled it a single and Fresno State jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
SDSU tied it in the bottom of the second when Murphy hit a two-run homer. It was the second home run of the season for Murphy.
The Bulldogs took back the lead in the third on a Jamie Hicks groundout the plated Alesia Denby.
SDSU once again answered in the third as a double by Mac Barbara knocked in Brocki.
Neither team threatened again until the seventh when FS had two runners on with two outs on a walk and hit by pitch, but Allie Light struck out Juliana Wilson swinging to give San Diego State one last chance in regulation before Brocki’s two-out double ended the game.
Brocki had two of the seven Aztec hits to pace the offense.
Light (4-4) got the win after tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk, while striking out three. Dani Martinez got the start and gave up three runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out two.
THE NOTE
SDSU improved to 6-2 on the season in one-run games.

San Diego State improved to 12-3 on the season when scoring just four runs.
