SAN DIEGO COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS HIRING

September 14, 2012 (San Diego) – The chief law enforcement agency in San Diego County recently announced they are hiring.  They are seeking both sworn and professional staff including deputies, radio dispatchers, nurses, crime analysts and a variety of others.  Newly hired employees will be able to work at a variety of locations throughout the county at assignments in Law Enforcement, Courts or Detention Services Bureaus. 

From now until 2016, they are looking to fill 2,000 sworn and professional positions.  Some of the newly hired employees will fill staffing needs at the new Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee, increase patrol staffing in unincorporated areas and provide additional staff in several detention facilities as a result of the recent California Prison Realignment.

CITY OF EL CAJON RECREATION DEPARTMENT TEEN COALITION SEEKING APPLICANTS

September 12, 2012 (El Cajon) -- The City of El Cajon Teen Coalition kicks off another year of leadership and community service. Applications are actively circulating at El Cajon middle schools, high schools, and recreation centers, with applications also made available on the City’s website, at www.cityofelcajon.us.

Candidates must be residents of El Cajon or attend a school within the city limits, in grades 6th through 12th, and be under the age of 19 years old as of September 1, 2012. Those interested in becoming a teen coalition member need to complete an application and return it to the Recreation Department at City Hall, located at 200 Civic Center Way, in El Cajon, by Friday, October 5, 2012.

3RD ANNUAL TRANSPORTATION EXPO IS OCTOBER 3

 

September 11, 2012 (La Mesa) -- The 3rd Annual Transportation Expo, Highlighting Transportation Resources & Safety will be held on October 3 at 8:30 a.m. at the Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa.

A variety of exhibitors and speakers will offer tips on driving and road safety, transportation options, safety related topics including how to avoid mail fraud, ensure financial safety, disaster preparedness, and crime prevention. In addition, flu shots will be given by the Sharp Senior Resource Center Team for a $2.00 donation.

COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU – PARKS AND REC CREATE A CAMPING PSA

September 9, 2012 (San Diego) – Parks and Rec has created a camping PSA to be shown in movie theaters and on cable television.  Next time you settle into your seat and juggle your popcorn and your soda, keep your eyes on the giant, silver screen.  Along with reminders to turn off your cell phone, you’ll see a reminder of another sort - how to enjoy the outdoors at our County parks.

KEPLER DISCOVERS PLANETARY SYSTEM ORBITING TWO SUNS

Lead author SDSU astronomy professor Jerry Orosz said it's the first transiting circumbinary multi-planet system to be found.

September 6, 2012 (San Diego) -- Astronomers at the International Astronomical Union meeting announced the discovery of the first transiting circumbinary multi-planet system: two planets orbiting around a pair of stars. This discovery shows that planetary systems can form and survive even in the chaotic environment around a binary star. And such planets can exist in the habitable zone of their stars.

STARTING SEPT. 2ND, GREEN LINE GOES DOWNTOWN! $3.2 MILLION IN BUS SERVICE ALSO ADDED

September 1, 2012 (San Diego) – Beginning September 2, all trolley lines end in the downtown area, providing single seat service to downtown from everywhere on the Trolley network. It’s all part of the Trolley Renewal project, designed to improve Blue Line and Orange Line stations and bring low-floor cars to the entire Trolley system.

Now, the Green Line will travel through Old Town and terminate at 12th & Imperial via Seaport Village, Convention Center and Gaslamp Quarter stations. Blue Line trains will travel between San Ysidro and America Plaza. Orange Line trains will travel between El Cajon and Santa Fe Depot. 

In addition to an improved Trolley network, the Metropolitan Transit System will add considerable bus services on September 2.

DULZURA SHERIFF STATION OPEN HOUSE AUGUST 25

 

August 23, 2012 (Dulzura) – The community of Dulzura is invited to attend the grand re-opening and open house at the SDRFPD Dulzura-Barrett Station #35, 1135 Community Building Rd., Dulzura on August 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  After being remodeled, the SDRFPD station will now be manned by SDR/SDCFA volunteer fire fighters along with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Rural Division Law Enforcement Deputies.

The event will be attended by Supervisor Diane Jacob, Rural Fire Chief Dave Nissen, Assistant Sheriff Patricia Duke, Sheriff Lieutenant Rose Kurupas, Sheriff Sergeant Joe Leos, as well as members of the San Diego Rural Fire Board.  Refreshments will be served.

A NEW FARMERS MARKET IN RANCHO SAN DIEGO

 

July 29, 2012 (Rancho San Diego) – Rancho San Diego Farmers Market is now open every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Cuyamaca College Campus, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway, El Cajon.  The market was created to bring locally grown fresh produce to the community on a weekly basis and to celebrate the diversity of culture in East County.

SAFE LIGHT PROJECT: FREE SOLAR MOTION-ACTIVATED LIGHTS FOR QUALIFYING SAN DIEGO RESIDENTS

 
July 13, 2012 (San Diego)--The City of San Diego and the nonprofit organization Rebuilding Together San Diego, have developed a program to increase lighting in several areas within the City. 
 
Rebuilding Together San Diego has coordinated purchase and installation of high powered, motion-activated L.E.D floodlights which are battery-operated and charged via solar panels. These lights and their installation are free of charge to qualifying residents.

July 11, 2012 (San Diego County) -- Heat waves and power outages have been plaguing the nation in recent weeks and temperatures are expected to rise higher than usual in San Diego County within the next few days.
 
“In these extreme weather conditions, it’s important for people to be aware of how much power they are using because the high demand for energy and high temperatures go hand-and-hand,” said Dave Weil, director of building commissioning and sustainability at the University of California, San Diego. “At UC San Diego, saving energy is a top priority all year-round. The university generates about 90 percent of its annual electricity demand.”

SWEET NEWS: NEW LEMON GROVE LIBRARY RECEIVES MAJOR DONATIONS

July 1, 2012 (Lemon Grove) – A new public library is now under construction in Lemon Grove at the corner of School Lane and Lincoln, thanks to Prop W bond funds.   
 
On June 27, Friends of the Lemon Grove Library presented the county library with a check for $60,000 to purchase the “First Day Collection for the new library. During the ceremony, the group also gave $5,000 from the City of Lemon Grove raised by Rosemary Putnam.

June 29, 2012 (El Cajon) – Cuyamaca College is offering College for Kids July 9 – August 9 at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway, El Cajon.  It is a summer enrichment program for children between the ages of 8-14 that will teach new and meaningful skills through participation in classes such as art, dance fitness, science, media and more.

SANTEE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES NOW PLAYING

June 19, 2012 (Santee) – The city of Santee’s Summer Concert Series kicked off its 29th year on June 14 with The Destroyers, Navy Band Southwest.  The concert was accompanied by a food truck rally. 

The nine-concert series features the return of three musical acts that attracted sizeable crowds last year, as well as an eclectic lineup of 7 other bands that range from country to classic rock. Performances are every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through August 16, except July 5.

BASKET WEAVING AT MISSION TRAILS PARK JUNE 23

June 15, 2012 (San Diego) – A Kumeyaay instructor from Baja California will teach how to make an authentic willow basket at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground, 2 Father Junipero Serra Trail San Diego on June 23.  The baskets will be smaller copies of the large willow granaries that were historically woven to store each family’s annual crop of acorns.
