June 8, 2012 (Alpine) – Looking for something fun, free and cool for the kids to do this summer? Your child or teen can receive a free bowling game each week-day this summer, along with bowling shoes, in Viejas Bowl’s new “Say Yes to Bowling” program.  The fun starts in June and continues on through August.

PARKS & REC SUMMER 2012 TEEN NITE PROGRAM KICK-OFF MAY 4

April 28, 2012 (San Diego) – The Department of Parks and Recreation announced the May 4 kick-off of their Summer 2012 Teen Nite Program that will run through September 14.  The recreation centers will have extended Friday hours from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. all summer long with lots of free activities for boys and girls ages 12 to 17.

April 21, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) –“Every once in a while, government does something that is not only good news, but refreshing,” local author and former public radio producer Walter Carlin said of last month’s decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to open the airwaves up for community radio stations, rather than reserving that space for mega-networks with concentrated ownership and opinion-shaping power.
 
The decision, however, presents a new challenge, Carlin notes. “Can and will local radio respond?”

SANTEE LAKES INSTALLING NEW PARK SHELTERS AND PLAYGROUND

 
April 6, 2012 (Santee) -- Santee Lakes is getting a facelift on Lakes 1 and 5. The park is replacing three old picnic/gazebo structures and an outdated playground with new up‐to‐date structures. This will give visitors an opportunity to picnic in a beautiful setting and will add much needed shade, especially during the summer months.

BUTTERFLY JUNGLE OPENS SATURDAY AT SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK

 
March 23, 2012 (San Diego) -- A Giant Owl butterfly delights Mac Jarman, 5, of La Mesa, when it lands on his red hair. Mac was one a few lucky kids who got a sneak peek at San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Butterfly Jungle Friday. The three-week festival of flutter opens on Saturday.

Once a year, guests at the Safari Park are enchanted as thousands of butterflies flitter around them in a walk-through aviary called Hidden Jungle. Butterfly Jungle runs through Sunday, April 15. New this year, guests can use identification cards in the exhibit that will help them determine the names of many of the 30 species.

The event is open to the public and will raise awareness of the importance of adoption from local rescues and shelters.

EL CAJON NAMES DOUGLAS WILLIFORD AS NEW CITY MANAGER

 
February 16, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Mayor Mark Lewis announced that the El Cajon City Council voted unanimously to select Douglas Williford as its new City Manager.  The selection follows a thorough nationwide search in which 64 candidates applied for the position.  Williford currently serves as the Deputy Executive Director of the Southern California Association of Governments.  He has past experience working in the City of El Cajon’s Planning Department, as well as similar positions with the City of Santee and the City of Irvine.
