September 12, 2013 (San Diego) – School is now back in session and along with it comes sports! With over 30 million youths participating in sports, injuries are very likely to occur. Most sports related injuries can be prevented with some basic preventive measures says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.
Keeping in shape “prior” to the season is a good start. It’s still hot, so take it easy on hot or humid days and keep hydrated. Warm up prior to engaging is also important. Many schools require a physical exam before starting a school sport. Check with your child’s school. You may even want to have your child get a physical from your family physician.

September 9, 2013 (San Diego) -- Charger season is once again upon us, with the opening game tonight at 7:20 PST. The buzz in the air is different than it normally is in San Diego; instead of lofty goals of the Super Bowl, fans seem to just be looking to avoid a historically bad year. Considering the Chargers haven’t made a playoff appearance since 2009, you can’t blame the pessimistic views of the Chargers’ faithful coming into the 2013 campaign.
The Bolts have had their fair share of unfortunate off-season events, including the losses of linebacker Melvin Ingram and receiver Danario Alexander to injuries that will sideline them both for the season.

September 1, 2013 (Rancho San Diego)--The Friday night lights were back on as East County’s Steele Canyon Cougars faced off against the South Bay’s Chula Vista Spartans in the season opener. The Cougars were favored to win, but the Spartans would be no walk in the park coming off a 6-5 record just a season ago. The game focused on Steele Canyon’s high powered offense and the Spartans’ efforts to slow it down and stay in the game.
After exceptional junior Jordan Johnson (who plays both safety and quarterback) led the Cougars deep into Spartan territory, Steele had to settle for a 30-yard field goal by senior kicker Kenneth Bagdasar. Bagdasar was strong all game, going five of five on point-after-attempts and also booting another 25-yard field goal. He could easily be one of the best legs in East County this season.

Match-up set the stage for infamous Billie Jean King-Bobby Riggs "Battle of the sexes"
By Richard Muscio
I just returned from the Ramona suburb of San Vicente on Mother’s Day 2013, where I spent the weekend to see what festivities or activities might be going on to commemorate the 40th anniversary of one of the most historic tennis matches in our country’s history. Sadly, I found nothing there, beyond the beautiful scenery.
On Mother’s Day 1973 (May 13, 1973 to be exact), the first “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match took place there, as a sales gimmick put on by the legendary real estate developer Ray Watt. Aimed at drawing the Hollywood crowd 120 miles south to the still-remote San Diego Country Estates, developer Watt hoped to bring attention to the 3,000 vacant lots he had for sale there, in hopes that actors and actresses and other luminaries would buy his vacant lots and construct glorious vacation homes thereupon.
May 8,2013 (San Diego) – Mayor Bob Filner met with former Governor Mitt Romney on Monday evening to discuss the City of San Diego’s Olympic bid for the 2024 Summer Games.
Mayor Filner announced last month that the cities of San Diego and Tijuana will submit a bi-national bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The Mayor invited Romney to his office to ask if the former Presidential candidate, who formerly headed up Salt Lake City’s Olympic organizing committee, would lend his advice to the effort. Romney said yes.
OLYMPIC COMMITTEE RULES MAY PRECLUDE BINATIONAL OLYMPICS HERE; MAYOR FILNER "UNDAUNTED", SEEKS RULE CHANGE
Media outlets reported today that the International Olympic Committee rules may prohibit a joint bid by the U.S. and Mexico to host the 2024 Olympic Summer Games in San Diego and Tijuana.
In response Mayor Bob Filner released the following statement. “We are undaunted by this statement from the International Olympic Committee. We don’t have all the answers right now."
April 27, 2013 (San Diego) – Mayor Bob Filner’s efforts to win the bid to host the 2024 Olympics in our border region is getting serious consideration from the U.S. Olympic Committee. The San Diego/Tijuana team is on the list of top 10 cities under consideration.
The Mayor announced his idea earlier this year at the opening of the San Diego’s new Tijuana office, alongside Mayor Carlos Bustamante, who is wholeheartedly behind the idea and committed to working together to make this happen.
“I am very serious about this proposal and clearly the U.S. Olympic Committee is paying attention,” said Mayor Bob Filner. “Imagine the message we could send to the world in the true spirit of what the Olympics is all about, bringing together people and countries. What better way to do it than with our neighbors south of the border?”
Mayor Bob Filner and Mayor Carlos Bustamante will soon name a top-notch committee to guide the bi-national effort.
