LA MESA MAN ARRESTED AFTER SHOOTING, SWAT STAND-OFF

March 23, 2017 (La Mesa) — Daniel Mitchell, 29, was arrested early Tuesday morning at his home on Blackton Drive in La Mesa after a SWAT team incident.

Mitchell reportedly fired into the home Monday evening following a dispute with his roommate, who fled the residence unharmed, 10 News reports.

ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT TURNS SELF IN

March 21, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) -- A man suspected of robbing several East County businesses has turned himself in this afternoon and is now in custody, the Sheriff’s Department advises. The suspect is Randall Lee, 22, of Lakeside.

March 21, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) – Public help is sought to locate a suspect who robbed a Best Buy in La Mesa and Walmart stores in Santee and El Cajon. The suspect fire shots from a BB gun at store employees in two locations and threatened another employee with a hatchet before fleeing in a brown, four-door Buick.  County Crime Stoppers is offer a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of this suspected wanted for multiple robberies and assaults with a deadly weapon.

March 13, 2017 (El Cajon) — Rev. Shane Harris at the National Action Network in San Diego announced that he has asked Calif. Attorney General Xavier Becerra to appoint a special prosecutor to conduct an independent investigation into the death of Alfred Olango. Olango, an African-American man, was fatally shot in Sept. 2016 by an El Cajon Police officer.

SHOOTING ON I-8 IN LA MESA INJURES MAN

March 12, 2017 (La Mesa) – A passenger in the backseat of a 2005 Infiniti Q45 traveling east on I-8 near Fletcher Parkway was injured by a bullet fired from a passing vehicle at 4 a.m. At least five rounds were fired, said California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein.

March 10, 2017 (San Diego) -- The Public Defender’s Office will soon have a new leader.

 

Randy Mize, who rose through the ranks of the department to an executive role over the past 29 years, will become the County’s top Public Defender. Mize, 57, currently the department’s Chief Deputy of the Primary Public Defender, will replace outgoing Public Defender Henry Coker.

March 9, 2017 (Rolando) – A gunman fired multiple rounds into the Blue Nile Hookah Lounge shortly after midnight, but fortunately no one was injured.

Panicked customers dove for cover to avoid bullets that went through a front window and also struck vehicles in the 7200 block of El Cajon Blvd.

RACISM CAN NULLIFY JURY VERDICTS, SUPREME COURT RULES

March 6, 2017 (Washington D.C.) – By a 5 to 3 vote, the Supreme Court has ruled that a verdict can be voided and a new trial ordered if a juror showed racial bias.

The case involved a Colorado racetrack employee convicted of sexual battery after a juror stated during deliberations that the defendant must be guilty because “he’s Mexican, and Mexican men take whatever they want.”

Feb. 26, 2017 (San Diego) – The San Diego County Bar Foundation awarded $110,000 from its 2016 Indigent Criminal Defense Fund to three San Diego nonprofits that offer legal defense programs for individuals and families. The charitable arm of the San Diego County Bar Association, the Bar Foundation created its Indigent Criminal Defense Fund to further and support indigent criminal defense programs, projects and activities in San Diego County.

Update February 25, 2017 :  The victim has been identified as Santee resident Andrea Daves, 33. Cause and manner of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

February 23, 2017 (Lakeside) – Sheriff’s deputies responded to a vehicle fire on a cul-de-sac in the 11200 block of Mast Boulevard in Lakeside last night shortly after 11 p.m.  They found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

February 20, 2017 (Santee) -- The Sheriff has issued this warning for Santee residents: 

 

If you live in Santee, be aware of increased law enforcement activity in your area. A SWAT Standoff is underway in the 8500 block of Massery Lane. Deputies were called to the home just after 9:00 a.m. following reports of a disturbance. A man is holed up inside the home possibly armed with a gun. He is the only person inside the house.

3 ARRESTED IN COLLEGE AREA DRUG RAID

February 16, 2017 (San Diego) -- Detectives and Crime Suppression Team Deputies from the Sheriff's Alpine Station, with the assistance of the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail, served a search warrant at 5090 College Ave. #5 in San Diego this afternoon. Deputies from the Special Enforcement Detail (SED) served the search warrant, since the occupants were believed to be armed with firearms and selling narcotics.

February 15, 2017 (Lemon Grove) – A suspect killed in a February 7th home invasion in Lemon Grove has been identified as a juvenile, 15-year-old Derrick Harris Jr.

The Sheriff’s Department seeks public help to identify a second suspect who remains at large, says Lieutenant Kenneth Nelson with the San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Detail.

WANTED: I.D. THEFT AND BURGLARY SUSPECT

February 11, 2017 (San Diego's East County) - The North Coastal Sheriff's Station and San Diego County Fugitive Task Force want your help in finding a man wanted on felony charges of identity theft and burglary. Chance Arnold Bowman, 37,  was previously convicted of I.D. Theft, stealing a car, possessing drugs and violating his parole. He is known to frequent the East County.

He was last seen driving an older model Silver Honda Civic with a red hood and red rear bumper.

February 9, 2017 (Lemon Grove) - The Sheriff's Homicide Detail wants the public's help in identifying a suspect who was killed in a home invasion in Lemon Grove.

It happened just before 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7th at a home in the 2400 block of Edding Drive. Investigators say two armed suspects forced their way into the home. The homeowner's son and one of the suspects suffered gunshot wounds after a struggle. That suspect died. The homeowner's son is recovering from non-life threatening injuries.

February 8, 2017 (Spring Valley) – A 75-year-old man who was crossing Sweetwater Road north of Tyler Street in Spring Valley at 10 p.m. last night outside of a marked crosswalk was struck by a Mercedes. He died at the scene of his injuries.

February 7, 2017 (Lemon Grove) – A home invasion turned deadly after two men armed with pistols broke into a home on Edding Drive in Lemon Grove shortly before 2 a.m. 

One of the intruders shot and injured Francisco Suarez, Jr., 22.  His father, Francisco Suarez, 44, fired back and killed one of the gunmen, who died at the scene.

$7 MILLION IN DRUGS SEIZED

January 31, 2017 (San Diego) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the ports of entry in the San Diego and Imperial Valley Counties over the weekend intercepted approximately 9,600 pounds of narcotics including more than 500 pounds of marijuana hidden in a cargo shipment and another almost 8,400 pounds in a separate shipment, valued at almost $7 million.

AUTOPSY RESULT ON OLANGO SHOWS COCAINE, FOUR GUNSHOT WOUNDS

January 26, 2017 (El Cajon) – The County Medical Examiner has released autopsy results on Alfred Olango, who was fatally shot by an El Cajon Police officer last September.  The autopsy reveals that Olango was shot four times with bullets and simultaneously tased with a taser.

January 26, 2017 (Lemon Grove) – Last night, a suspect brandishing a handgun got into the backseat of a vehicle driven by a couple who had driven into a parking lot at the Keg N Bottle liquor store on Massachusetts Avenue in Lemon Grove. The suspect demanded cash, then exited the vehicle after getting money and fired several rounds.
