October 17, 2017 (San Diego) – A contracted firefighter from Missouri has died in Napa Valley after the water truck he was driving overturned.  Fatigue may have been a factor, according to Cal Fire.

Richard Edwords, a contracted water truck driver from Alpine on the scene in Napa, has been sending photos documenting his experience in the fires to East County Magazine, including poignant notes of thanks, such as this one (right):

So far, the 17 fires in northern California have killed 41 people, charred over 330 square miles, and burned over 5,700 homes and other buildings.  More than 90,000 people have been evacuated.

To the left is a map of the Napa fires, as of yesterday:

High winds and hot, dry weather have improved from last week, and firefighters are making progress battling the blazes, which have charred an area larger than San Francisco, Sacramento and several smaller counties combined.
