March 24, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State lacrosse continued their home stand tonight against St. Mary's.
Senior midfielder Kristen Hickey has been a dominant force for the Aztecs so far this season and she was again tonight. She scored the first goal of the game to put the Aztecs up 1-0. A minute later, freshman midfielder Taylor Sullivan tallied to make the score 2-0. Hickey made it 3-0 with her second with 22 minutes left in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Natalie Peel and freshman midfielder Morgan Taylor made it 5-0 Aztecs on back-to-back goals. The Gaels finally tallied with a goal by junior attacker Emily Mack with 16:14 left in the first half to make it 5-1 SDSU. The Aztecs pulled back to a five goal lead with a goal by Kirstie Greenlaw. The sophomore attacker’s first goal of the season put the Aztecs up 6-1. Just as St. Mary's senior midfielder Meagan Bennett narrowed the deficit back to four, Hickey scored herself a hat trick to give the Aztecs a 7-2 lead. But the Gaels brought it back to four with a goal by freshman midfielder Jillian Dunlap that made the score 7-3. Senior midfielder Alex Watson put the Aztecs back at a five goal lead. Her goal made the score 8-3 SDSU at the end of the first half.
Watson started the scoring right away in the second half to put the Aztecs up 9-3. Peel put the Aztecs in double digits and SDSU led 10-3. Sophomore midfielder Paige Hudak made it 11-3 Aztecs with her first goal of the night. Seconds later, junior attacker Claire Healy tallied for the Gaels to make it 11-4. Moments later, Greenlaw scored her second to make it 12-4 Aztecs. Senior midfielder Ijeoma Ikpe scored her first goal three minutes later to put SDSU up 13-4. Junior attacker Katherine Smith put the Aztecs up by 10 with a goal off a whistle. SDSU led 14-4 with under 10 minutes to go. Greenlaw added one more for her hat trick and the Aztecs led 15-4. The Gaels tried to rally with a goal to make it 15-5, but Smith added one more for good measure and the Aztecs emerged victorious with a 16-5 win to even their conference play record at 1-1 and improve their overall record to 6-3.
The Aztecs will face Cal on Sunday for a matinee game starting at noon.
