CALTRANS PROVIDES UPDATE ON I-8 PAVEMENT REPLACEMENT AND ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN EAST COUNTY

May 20, 2023 (San Diego’s East County) – The I-8 pavement replacement and road improvement project from Viejas Creek in Alpine to Pine Valley Creek is 40 percent completed after the first 160 days of work, with completion of the entire project expected in spring 2024.

WORK PLANNED FROM May 18 to June 8

 

  • Close out Stage 2 Phase 1 demo and remove old concrete, prepare subgrade, crush the old concrete, and place hot mix asphalt interlayer, place reinforcing steel and place concrete for new CRCP for Stage 2 Phase 2.
  • Crews have placed the concrete crusher on the shoulder. It is expected to move to median the week of May 29.
  • No work will take place on Memorial Day Monday, May 29.
  • Day work begins June 1.
  • A reminder that construction zone hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and 9 pm to 5 am. Crews do not work on weekends or when it rains/snows.

Reminder:

  • The hours for the on-call bicycle shuttle have changed. Services is now 8 am to 4 pm, 7 days a week.
  • There is also now an on-call Tow Truck Service. The phone number is 619-478-5616.
  • This project is replacing the existing concrete (which has exceeded its life expectancy) with Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP), a continual, smooth-riding surface capable of withstanding the heaviest loads and the most adverse environmental conditions. The life span of CRCP pavement may be up to 70 years, far exceeding existing road surfaces.

The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents, or other construction considerations. Travelers are reminded to follow the speed limit indicated in the construction zone, watch for highway workers and moving equipment, and please, Be Work Zone Alert.
