COUNTY LIBRARY’S ACOUSTIC SHOWCASE CONCERTS IN FEB. FEATURE MANY EAST COUNTY LOCATIONS

 January 27, 2012  (San Diego County) -- The winter series of the San Diego County Library Acoustic Showcase is coming to an end with eight concerts taking place in February!  The Acoustic Showcase series offers a wonderful variety of some of San Diego's very best singer/songwriters, folk music performers and story tellers. 

 
These concerts are FREE to the community.

Many of the works were painted in, and are about, Mission Trails and others are of South Africa where the artist previously lived.

KRUGER BROTHERS BRING AMERICAN MUSIC TRADITION TO CUYAMACA COLLEGE JANUARY 24

 
January 16, 2012 (El Cajon) --  World-renowned bluegrass band The Kruger Brothers will perform at the Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theatre on Tuesday, January 24, at 7:30 p.m. 

The Kruger Brothers play original music composed by Jens Kruger. It's called "unpretentious, cultivated, and delightfully fresh." The Kruger Brothers are known for their remarkable musicianship and unique take on the American Songbook.

January 15, 2012 (San Diego) – Southern Gospel singers Ernie Haas & Signature Sound will be performing at the College Avenue Baptist Church, 4747 College Avenue in San Diego on January 26 at 7:00 p.m.

The vocal group, founded in 2002 and winner of three GMA Dove awards, recently finished a nine country European tour and is soon to release its first new studio album in three years.

The quintet is part of the San Diego Clarinet Society, and is composed of professional musicians who have performed with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Ballet Orchestra, San Diego Opera Orchestra, and Starlight Opera.

January 5, 2012 (East County) -- The well-known East County Youth Symphony (ECYS) is going to form a new Wind Orchestra (concert band) which will be conducted by Joe Dyke, former instrumental music teacher in the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District. The band is a free (no tuition or fees) program for musicians ages 11 to 18 with at least one year of experience.

Wacky, irreverent and as entertaining as its predecessor from 1879, Pirates of Penzance Jr. spins a hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dimwitted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters, and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often ridiculous dictates of honor and duty.

 December 6, 2011 (Santee) -- Talented singers of the combined adult and children's/youth choir will present an evening of Christmas Music entitled, "And His Name Shall be Called Wonderful." One performance only will be held at 6:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 10052 Magnolia Avenue in Santee.


The performance is free and open to the public. There will be a variety of musical performances, including a handchime choir and a violinist, along with a live nativity. Refreshments will be served following the performance.

ASTONISHING METAL SCULPTURES DRAW VISITORS TO BORREGO VALLEY

December 1, 2011 (Borrego) -- The word is out: there are now more attractions than desert wildflowers and the spectacular Anza-Borrego Desert State Park drawing visitors to Borrego Valley.
 
 
People are coming from around the United States and internationally to see the 129 full-size metal sculptures, including many creations inspired by the animals that roamed this desert millions of years ago. These range from prehistoric mammals to historical characters, fanciful dinosaurs, and a 350-foot-long fanciful serpent.

December 1, 2011 (San Diego)—Leaping cossacks and flurries of snowflakes--See them all leap across the stage in the 22nd annual production of the Nutcracker by the San Diego Ballet Company Ballet.

Productions of the cherished holiday favorite by Peter Tchaikovsy will be presented Dec. 3-4 at the Birch North Park Theater in a co-production with the Grossmont College Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale. Additional shows will be presented December 17-18 at the UCSD Mandeville Auditorium, directed and choreographed by Robin Sheretz-Morgan and Javier Velasco.

LA MESA WOOD CARVER JOINS WORLD CHAMPION FOR EXPO AT MISSION TRAILS VISITORS' CENTER

November 27, 2011 (Santee) -- La Mesa's own Bob Berry was one of three wood carvers who met patrons of the Mission Trails Regional Park's 14,000 sq. ft visitors' and interpretive center, last weekend, Saturday, Nov. 19.  Joining Berry was John Rieger, as well as two-time world champion Del Herbert.  The trio, which combines for about a century of wood-carving experience, chatted with visitors at the center about the craft of wood-carving while providing a live demonstration.

BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS PAINTINGS AT LA MESA HEALTH LIBRARY THROUGH THE END OF NOVEMBER

 
November 21, 2011 (La Mesa) -- The Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, a consumer health library in La Mesa, is featuring an exhibit of 21 paintings by East County two breast cancer survivors through the end of November. The exhibit features 10 portraiture paintings by L.J. Crowe of El Cajon and 11 abstract collages and cat portraits by Jean Waters of San Carlos. Both artists are members of the Foothills Art Association.
