READER’S EDITORIAL: SAFETY CONCERNS REGARDING BUS ROUTES AGREEMENT BETWEEN GROSSMONT AND ALPINE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICTS

An open letter to the Grossmont-Union High School District governing board asserts changes led to “very late buses, lost children” and other serious problems

By Holly Hernandez, California School Employees Association President, Chapter 607 Alpine

April 30, 2018 (Alpine) -- CSEA has concerns with transportation issues that have been reoccurring since last Tuesday April 10th, 2018.

During Bargaining on April 12th, 2018, it was voiced by Holly Hernandez that GUHSD would not be able to go to four routes in Alpine. After four days of drastically failing at the attempt to comply with only four bus routes, the following occurred; very late buses, lost children, routes getting to bus stops in the mornings very early because of last minute route changes, parents not being notified of changes, incorrect student rosters, kindergartners being on the bus for up to 1 hr. 45 minutes, and very worried and frustrated students and parents.

MERCHANTS CRY FOUL OVER FARMER’S MARKET SURVEY AND VOICE CONCERNS OVER DEBTS OWED BY EVENT'S PROMOTER, AARON DEAN

Updated April 30, 2018:  The city has rescinded $3,400 in fines and administrative citations on Depot Springs after finding the property in "substantial compliance" April 26, for violations and citations dating from 11/30/17 through 4/11/18.

Also comments from city manager Yvonne Garrett on availability of the existing Farmer's Market site have been added.

By Miriam Raftery

April 29, 2018 (La Mesa) – Numerous merchants in La Mesa’s downtown village are calling for the City Council to reconsider its vote to move the Farmer’s Market to the heart of the village on Friday nights. Some say they were never contacted, while others contend they were deceived  in a survey sent around by the La Mesa Village Association (LMVA) about which night of the week the market would be held, and/or about the inclusion of food trucks. One says that her survey was forged—with even her name misspelled.

Several long-time merchants are also raising concerns over the financial stability of Aaron Dean, president of the La Mesa Village Merchants Association which is currently set to takeover management of the Farmer’s Market from the City of La Mesa starting the first Friday in May, on a six-month trial basis.

THE WIZARD OF OZ REVIEW: EL CAJON VALLEY HIGH APRIL 26 - MAY 5: IT TAKES COURAGE TO SHINE

By Kathy Carpenter

April 28, 2018 (El Cajon) -  Among the buildings when El Cajon Valley opened its doors in 1955 was The Little Theatre, a building that stands by itself. I've really grown to like the little building over the past few years. It's the only school I've been to with anything like this. In the next year or two it will be demolished for a bigger and better (in some views), events center to house band, drama and Associated Student Body (ASB).

If you have performed in this theatre, you may want to come out to a show soon. Introduce your children or grandchildren to a place of fond memories which will not be around much longer.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER REVIEW - ADVENTURE ON THE HIGH SEA APRIL 20 - MAY 13

By Kathy Carpenter

April 26, 2018 La Mesa) - Pirates, fairies, mermaids. starcatchers, and the little boy who never wanted to grow up: Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson do a great job explaining how Peter Pan, and the elements from the original story came about in a new novel. Rick Elice turned the novel into a play. Raylene J. Wall directed the Lamplighters version and brought the play to life. Fun, silly and well-acted, Peter and the Starcatcher makes you smile.

By Kendra Sitton

April 26, 2018 (Jamul) — ECM has new details on an attempted kidnapping of an 11-year-old girl walking between Oak Grove Middle School and Jamul Primary School on Tuesday.

The 6th grade student was using a dirt trail in the rural area frequented by other kids and even Oak Grove’s cross-country team. Near the bottom of the trail behind a baseball dugout, a man suddenly grabbed her backpack from behind, possibly in an attempt to knock her off her feet. She stood firm and then the suspect grabbed her arm tightly, so much so she described it as feeling like her arm was going to explode. She was able to escape and run towards the school.

April 24, 2018 (Lakeside) - El Capitan and Helix baseball have produced some outstanding college and MLB recruits and today, we got to see both programs in action at Hostetler Field on the campus of El Capitan High.  The Vaqueros, however, have had a rocky season, going 6-11, but the positive takeaway is that they are .500 (2-2) in the Grossmont League coming into today’s game.  The Highlanders have a decent overall record (12-7), but are strangely winless in league play, going 0-2.  Sophomore Thomas Caneday got the start today for Helix against senior Blake Peyton for El Cap.

MONTE VISTA GREASE REVIEW - THE PLAY YOU LOVE, LOVE, LOVE APRIL 18-28

By Kathy Carpenter

April 23, 2018 (Spring Valley) – Realization: most of today's high school students probably haven't see the movie “Grease.” Since the movie is one of my favorites and was popular for so long, I guess I always figure everyone has seen the movie. Then I heard a girl behind me saying she had never seen the movie. Light-bulb moment: not only have these kids not seen the show, they probably really don't know fifties music. The whole show is an alien piece to them.
