San Diego’s largest manufacturing expo is a unique opportunity to inspire students

August 28, 2019 (El Cajon) – The East County Economic Development Council’s (EDC) Manufacturing Expo is right around the corner, and more manufacturers are registering by the day to exhibit their companies and products. On October 1, the fourth annual event will bring manufacturing to Main Street. The Expo will be held in downtown El Cajon at Prescott Promenade from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and expects to bring in over 500 attendees.

The event is part of the national Manufacturing Day meant to showcase modern manufacturing. The East County EDC’s Manufacturing Expo highlights industry members thriving and growing in our own backyards.

As manufacturing technology has advanced across the nation, over 80% of manufacturers express difficulty finding qualified talent to fill their workforce needs. The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) recently reported that the country’s most business-critical issue facing manufacturing today is a skilled-labor shortage, exacerbated by the increasing rate of retirement among Baby Boomers. According to the NAM’s First Quarter Manufacturers’ Outlook Survey, more than 70 percent of manufacturers cite the inability to attract skilled workers as their top challenge.

In San Diego County alone, more than 26% of the manufacturing workforce is aging out, with an average age over 55.

This skilled worker shortage provides unique career opportunities, as many of the East County manufacturers are looking to hire. The East County EDC Manufacturing Expo will allow the public, especially students and jobseekers, a chance to see what’s made in their own backyard and discover the job opportunities and career paths this sector offers. On-site resume help will also be available.

Some of the major manufacturers already registered to attend include: Flexsystems, GKN Aerospace, RCP Block & Brick, Southland Envelope Company, Taylor Guitars, Quality Controlled Manufacturing Inc., and more.

Attendees can meet these manufacturers in-person and learn about the products they make right in San Diego's East County, plus look for demonstrations throughout the Expo.

The East County Manufacturing Expo is free and open to the public.
