January 30, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – East County Magazine has been awarded the World Council for Nature’s 2013 award.

“A number of articles published in East County Magazine have been brought to my attention,” Mark Duchamp, Chairman of WCFN, a global organization based in Spain, wrote in an e-mail to ECM’s editor. “The work you do informing people of the threats against nature in your county is commendable. The World Council for Nature wishes to honor your publication with the WCFN award for 2013.”

ECM editor Miriam Raftery issued this statement.  “We are thrilled to receive this international recognition  from the esteemed World Council for Nature for our efforts to educate the public on the dangers that some so-called `green’ projects in our region pose to wildlife and the environment. While I believe it’s important to address climate change, priority should be given to those projects with the least negative environmental impacts such as solar on roofs and parking lots in urban areas of peak demand, instead of industrial-scale wind and solar facilities that devastate our mountain, desert and wetland environments,”

She elaborated, “Current federal subsidies reward a bigger-is-better mentality while disregarding impacts on human health, wildlife, habitat, Native American sacred sites, scenic views and even severe fire danger posed by many or these projects. There are cleaner, greener solutions for reducing our carbon footprint--including investment in mass transit, retrofitting buildings with energy efficiency standards, vertical axis wind turbines for individual use, solar on roofs and parking lots, biofuels, and energy conservation.”

This marks the 59th major award that East County Magazine has received since its inception in 2008.  East County Magazine is a publication of the nonprofit Heartland Coalition and is the sister organization of United Green, which promotes sustainability. Many of ECM’s awards have been for environmental reporting.  San Diego’s East County is among the first regions designated a federal energy corridor and has served as a canary in the coal mine, revealing many emerging and dangerous dark sides of projects presented as green that in fact result in massive and irreversible harm to nature including wildlife.

The World Council for Nature (WCFN) has a mission to defend Nature against aggressions from man.  Its mission statement continues, “The world has entered a phase of accelerated destruction, where traditional ecologists are no longer holding natural habitats and biodiversity as their first concern. Politics and money have corrupted the ecology movement, and most environmentalists today endorse the destruction of more nature in order to ‘save the planet.’ WCFN denounces this perversion, and will defend Nature as its number one priority.”

Politics and money have corrupted the ecological movement, the group contends, and there is a need for fresh air.
