June 19, 2024 (San Diego's East County) -- Congratulations to Whitney Wegman-Wood and Sandy Nissou, two East County women who are nominated for their work on films recognized by Film Consortium San Diego for the upcoming San Diego Film Festival this Saturday.
Whitney Wegman-Wood (photo, right) lives in the College Grove neighborhood. Her entry is “The Last Butterflies,” in which she wrote and acts, along with Cooper Andrews, know for his role in The Walking Dead television series and Shazaam, a feature movie.
“The Last Butterflies,” tells the story of a mother trying to protect herself and her child from the damaging effects of climate change on the planet and its inhabitants. Whitney closely followed new stories about the environment and consulted with climate scientists when working on the project. Experts told her that dire harm to the earth could begin to manifest between the years 2045 to2080, a future that contemporary film audiences will be sure to pay close attention to.
Whitney has been nominated in the category of First Time Film Maker and Best Narrative Short, as well as Best Writing and Best Lead Actress. Whitney also teaches about film production with San Diego’s Arts and Education Program and Project Performance. She goes to Film Freeway to learn about film festivals around the world, about ninety-percent of which are listed on the site.
Sandy Nissou (photo, left), who lives near Mt. Helix, has worked as a structural engineer, paralegal, and currently as an event planner, while following her passion with film production. She has been nominated for Best Costume Design, Makeup/Hair, Best Ensenble Cast, and for Best Narrative Feature for “Hemet, or the Landlady Don’t Drink Tea.”
Film Consortium San Diego will be presenting the awards to the nominees for the 2024 San Diego Film Awards on Saturday, June 22, from 5-10 pm at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. Tickets are on sale at the San Diego Film Festival website. The ceremony will also be broadcast on KPBS.
