State-of-the-art facility will bring together performing arts programs in a central location; provides modern new venue for school, district, and community events

East County News Service

March 1, 2019 (El Cajon) – Grossmont High School broke ground last Tuesday on a state-of-the-art facility that will bring together performing arts programs including dance, choral, digital music, and drama. The $26 million project is funded by Proposition U and Ballot Measure BB.

The new facility replaces outdated performing arts facilities that no longer meet the needs of the campus.  It will provide the school, district, and community a modern venue for workshops, conferences, and other special events. It will also serve as a Board Room for GUHSD trustees.

Grossmont High School, established in 1920, is the oldest high school in San Diego’s East County.  Home of the Foothillers, the school is home to approximately 2,800 students.

Slated for completion in fall 2020, the facility will include:

  • Auditorium with seating for 475
  • “Black box” theater
  • Dance studio
  • Choral studios
  • Digital music classroom
  • Scene shop
  • Green room
  • Dressing room
  • Indoor and outdoor learning and gathering spaces

The project will include a number of ‘green’ features, including:

  • Extensive energy-efficiencies resulting from extensive data analysis and high-performance design collaboration
  • High-efficiency plumbing and fixtures
  • Drought-tolerant landscape
  • Maximized use of natural daylighting
  • Windows with dual-pane, low-E (low emissivity) glass that minimizes the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light that can pass through, without compromising the transmission of quality, more healthy light
  • A “cool roof” that will help reflect more light and absorb less heat than a traditional roof
