July 24, 2013 (Rancho Penasquitos) – Attention, motorists: Interstate 15 southbound will be closed this weekend between State Route 56 (the Ted Williams Parkway exit) to Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard/Poway Road.

The closure Saturday to Monday is due to drainage improvements. Southbound express lanes will be open as a detour and will be available to all drivers free of charge.

Motorists who don’t use the car pool lanes will be detoured to westbound State Route 56 and then onto surface streets.

Northbound lanes on I-15 will not be affected by the closure.

Expect long traffic delays, Caltrans spokesman Gustavo Dallarda warns. He adds, “The best thing for motorists to do is steer clear of the area completely.” Drivers are also asked to watch out for highway workers in the area.

Caltrans is also preparing for another major freeway closure this summer. Interstate 805 (I-805) will be closed for 7 miles in both directions on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 3 p.m. through 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19 between State Route 54 and State Route 905 so crews can demolish the East Palomar Street Bridge to make way for a new Direct Access Ramp (DAR).

Detour routes and other construction information can be found at http://www.keepsandiegomoving.com or by calling the I-15 Express Lanes project information line at (858) 668-3368.
