APPLE FEST FACES SHORTFALL OF APPLES
By Miriam Raftery
October 2, 2014 (Julian)--Apple farmers in Julian have not been able to savor the fruits of their labors. The drought has hit apple orchards hard, along with a warmer than normal winter followed by a spring freeze.
That means fewer apples those hoping to pick their own fruits during Julian’s annual Apple Days Festivals this weekend.
10 News reports that at Peacefield Orchard, only three out of 500 apple trees produced fruit this year. A neighboring orchard had no crop at all.
Some other orchards do remain open, however – and there will still be plenty of apple cider, apple pie and other traditional apple products for visitors to Julian – even if some of those applies had to be brought in from other areas this year.
