EXPLOSIVES STILL LURK AT EX-MILITARY SITES
By Miriam Raftery
November 18, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – UT San Diego has published a list of nine danger zones for explosives still lurking beneath the ground at former military sites. It may surprise you to learn that seven of those are in East County and all nine are in inland areas.
The highest risk site is Camp Lockett in Campo, a former Army base that is currently used by equestrian groups. Five are in the Borrego Springs desert in the Anza Borrego desert (Benson/Ocotillo Dry Lake, Camp Ensign, Borrego Hotel, Borrego Navy Military Wash, Clark Dry Lake). One is in Ramona (the Ramona Bombing target area near Highway 67 and Highland Valley Road). Others include the Brown Field Bombing Range in Otay and Camp Elliot near Sycamore Canyon in the Scripps Ranch area.
