PHOTOS OF THE WEEK: DESERT BIRDS
March 4, 2016 (Jacumba Hot Springs) – Thanks to Eric Kallen for sending more photos of birds showing up in March in the high desert town of Jacumba Hot Springs—including both migratory and year-round residents. Below are his notes on this desert denizens:
Sage Thrasher (cover photo) - We’re at the northern edge of this bird’s winter range. They’re related to, and about the same size as, the common Northern Mockingbird.
Vesper Sparrow (right) - This large sparrow has been easy to find around Jacumba this winter. Most years this is a hard bird to find.
Black-throated Sparrow (below) - Common bird of desert and desert scrub habitats.
