East County News Service
June 21, 2017 (San Diego) - Out of the Boat Swim, a nonprofit, provides free water-safety and beach programs to refugee and underprivileged children living in San Diego. Out of the Boat Swim offers free beach and water-safety programs to help refugee and inner city kids integrate during a challenging time of transition. Some of the children will go on to become Junior Guards in the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program by design of the partnership between Out of the Boat Swim and San Diego Junior Lifeguards.
Currently, Out of the Boat Swim volunteers use their own vehicles to transport about 40 kids to and from the events on each activity day. The nonprofit is seeking donations to purchase a 12-passenger van to reach more children, as requests for Out of the Boat Swim's services now exceeds their capacity. San Diego-based Sunsational Swim School has agreed to match all donations up to $4,000 between now and July 1.
The importance of teaching swimming and beach safety skills to refugee children and teens was highlighted by the recent death of an refugee teen from El Cajon who drowned during his first beach outing with friends.
