December 18, 2018 (Spring Valley) – A clerk at the Arco convenience store in the 9000 block of Campo Road assaulted a deputy who responded to a call reporting that the clerk was threatening customers with a knife. The caller reported that the clerk appeared to be under the influence of a drug and chased a customer with a knife.

When a deputy attempted to arrest the clerk, “the suspect lunged at the deputy and began fighting,” says Sergeant Garth Schick. “The clerk bit the deputy on the right forearm and attempted to remove the deputy’s firearm from his holsters.”

The deputy forced the clerk to the ground and held him there until more deputies arrived to assist him. The deputy was taken to a medical facility for treatment of abrasions to his elbows and knees, as well as the bite on his arm.

Deputies from the Rancho San Diego substation arrested the clerk, identified as Layth Mohammed, 23. The clerk was treated by paramedics at the scene for minor scratches on his face, before being taken to the San Diego Central Jail and booked for assault on a peace officer.
