MIGRATORY BUTTERFLIES FLUTTER ACROSS REGION

March 13, 2019 (Borrego Springs) – This year’s super bloom season has brought an added bonus.  “Butterflies are gracing us with even more color,” says photographer Bob Kutscher, who snapped this image south of Clark Lake in the Anza-Borrego desert.  Swarms of the Painted Lady butterflies on their migratory path from Mexico are being reported across Southern California.

The butterflies will lay eggs and caterpillars will feast on desert plants. As adults, they will migrate to Northern California. The next generation will travel on to the Pacific Northwest for the summer months.  Then yet another generation of Painted Lady butterflies will wing their way south next fall, until a future generation of the beautiful butterflies reaches their wintering grounds in Mexico.
