June 4, 2026 (Lakeside) — For San Diego County residents looking to explore the cosmos without having to go far, the checking out the universe is within your reach.
Through the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation’s “Parks After Dark” program, the San Diego Astronomy Association[1] (SDAA) is bringing a series of free, public Star Parties to Lakeside’s Sycamore Canyon and Oakoasis preserves this summer and fall.

West Nile Virus found in crows near Rolando and Skyline areas

June 4, 2026 (San Diego’s East County) — County workers found West Nile virus in two dead crows picked up near Rolando and Skyline. This is a good reminder that people should take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites, because mosquitoes can spread the virus. (more…)

June 4, 2026 (San Diego) — On May 22, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services published a memo[1] outlining new guidance for green card applicants. Under the policy, some applicants will now be required to leave the U.S. and apply through a U.S. consulate in their home country or abroad.
The decision affects temporary visa holders, including students, temporary workers and tourists who come to the U.S. for a limited time and specific purpose. (more…)

June 3, 2026 (Jacumba) — San Diego County officials and fire chiefs recently gathered in the county’s high desert area to break ground on a new, state-of-the-art county fire station.
Fire Station 43, spearheaded by San Diego County Fire and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) marks a huge upgrade for emergency response infrastructure in an area that is increasingly threatened by extreme weather and intense wildfire seasons.

June 3, 2026 (Julian) — Roots rock and Americana tunes are coming to fill the mountains of East and North County with original music this weekend during the Fifth Annual Julian Town Square Music Festival[1].
The free community celebration will run from noon until 6 p.m., Saturday, June 6 at 2712 Washington St. in Julian.
Organized by the nonprofit Julian Community Heritage Foundation[2], with more support from the Julian Chamber of Commerce[3], the festival is the main fundraiser for the support of the continued development of the Julian Town Square — a historic corner lot becoming a permanent outdoor park and performance space.

June 3, 2026 (El Cajon) — A Santa Barbara County resident walked away a millionaire after an $8 bet led to her hitting a seven-figure jackpot last month at Sycuan Casino Resort[1].
The woman (shown in photo above, courtesy Sycuan) from Santa Barbara turned the $8 wager into a $1,278,830.66 payout while playing the “Dancing Drums Dragon” slot machine on Sunday, May 31. The win stands as the largest jackpot awarded at the El Cajon property so far this year.
“I still can’t believe I won, but I deserve this,” said the winner, known as Michelle K., following the payout.

June 3, 2026 (San Diego) – In the race to fill the redrawn 48th Congressional district seat being vacated by the retirement of Republican Darrell Issa, a a redrawn district that Democrats hope to flip from red to blue, the November run-off will be between Supervisor Jim Desmond, a Republican, and San Diego City Councilmember Marni Von Wilpert, a Democrat. Desmond currently has 41.6 percent of the votes counted thus far, while von Wilpert has 19.5 percent. (more…)
