August 29, 2010 (San Diego) – Sheriff Bill Gore announced last week that the Search and Rescue Unit and added a new component: an Urban Search and Rescue division. Urban search-and-rescue is considered a multi-hazard discipline, as it may be needed for a variety of hazards including earthquakes, storms, tornadoes floods dam failures, technological accidents, terrorist activities, and hazardous materials releases.

Search and Rescue involves the location, extrication, and initial medical stabilization of victims trapped in confined spaces. Structural collapse is most often the cause of victims being trapped, but victims may also be trapped in other situations such as transportation accidents.

The Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association recently approved a $75,00 donation for purchase of a trailer and collateral equipment for the new unit.

“I, along with our volunteers and coordinators who work this critical field, are very grateful to the Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association for their enormous generosity,” commented Sheriff Gore. “We continue to see opportunities for growth and with the altruism of the Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association; we are able to realize our vision.”

The Department’s Search and Rescue Unit was honored with a County proclamation presented by Chairwoman Pam Slater-Price last week.
