Joe Biden Stands Up For Democracy In NATO Speech (Meidas News)

... As over 32 world leaders gather in Washington, D.C. this week for the Summit, President Biden is putting the world on notice that the United States of America will always uphold democracy and will stand up to authoritarians like Vladimir Putin who work to tear democracy down. This NATO summit is particularly important given the fact that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has now entered its third year with Putin continuing his war of aggression, targeting civilians across Ukraine.

Trump claims not to know who is behind Project 2025. A CNN review found at least 140 people who worked for him are involved (CNN)

Donald Trump has lately made clear he wants little to do with Project 2025, the conservative blueprint for the next Republican president that has attracted considerable blowback in his race for the White House.  “I have no idea who is behind it,” the former president recently claimed on social media. Many people Trump knows quite well are behind it.

Biden is eyeing big changes for the Supreme Court. But he needs Congress to make them (NPR)

President Biden is preparing to call for term limits and an enforceable ethics code for U.S. Supreme Court justices in what would be sweeping changes to the high court and the way it operates. The proposals are a long shot because a constitutional amendment or congressional action — two routes that would likely be needed — are next to impossible in the current political climate.

Special counsel to appeal ruling dismissing Trump’s documents case  (The Hill)

Special Counsel Jack Smith will appeal a federal judge’s ruling earlier on Monday dismissing former President Trump’s classified documents indictment, according to Smith’s spokesman.  U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon ruled that Smith was not lawfully appointed, ordering that Trump’s charges be dismissed.  “The dismissal of the case deviates from the uniform conclusion of all previous courts to have considered the issue that the Attorney General is statutorily authorized to appoint a Special Counsel,” Peter Carr, spokesman for Smith’s office, said in a statement.

J.D. Vance As Trump’s VP: “A Corporate CEO’s Dream And A Worker’s Nightmare” (Lever)

Vance authored the 2016 blockbuster memoir Hillbilly Elegy and fashioned himself as a “conservative outsider” fighting for everyday people. But during his 2022 U.S. Senate campaign, we revealed that the one-time venture capitalist counted himself among the elite few able to take advantage of a notorious carried-interest tax loophole ... In 2023, following our coverage of lax railroad safety regulations and the toxic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, Vance co-authored the Railway Safety Act....But three months later, we exposed that Vance had since quietly amended his own legislation to delay the safety reforms at the request of rail and chemical industry lobbyists.

JD Vance once compared Trump to Hitler. Now they are running mates. (Reuters)

Eight years ago, in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, J.D. Vance was a bitter critic of Donald Trump. Publicly, he called the Republican presidential candidate an "idiot" and said he was "reprehensible." Privately, he compared him to Adolf Hitler. But by the time the former president tapped Vance to be his running mate on Monday, the Ohio native had become one of Trump's most ardent defenders, standing by his side even when other high-profile Republicans declined to do so.

Satellite images show expansion of suspected Chinese spy bases in Cuba (Apple News)

Images captured from space show the growth of Cuba’s electronic eavesdropping stations that are believed to be linked to China, including new construction at a previously unreported site about 70 miles from the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay...The study from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank, follows reporting last year by The Wall Street Journal that China and Cuba were negotiating closer defense and intelligence ties, including establishing a new joint military training facility on the island and an eavesdropping facility.

How these Ukrainian artists are using their talents to support the war effort (NPR)

The Ukrainian war effort has been cobbled together through crowdfunding and volunteer initiatives. Along with drones, medical kits and body armor, many Ukrainians have donated private vehicles to help transport their defenders at the front, and chipped in for the purchase of cars and trucks from abroad.  Like so many Ukrainians, Neak, 43, one of the painters, asked himself what he could do to best support the military when the full-scale invasion began. He quickly realized his expertise with graffiti allowed him to perfect the complex art of obscuring vehicles from snipers, artillery and the electronic eyes of Russian drones.

Outrage in China over use of unwashed fuel tankers to transport cooking oil (Guardian)

It is not clear where the cooking oil in the fuel-contaminated tankers ultimately ended up. Follow-up reports tracking the truckers identified in the Beijing News article suggested that the tankers delivered oil to packaging facilities run by household brand names in China, intensifying concerns that people could be consuming toxic oil. The article also quoted an industry insider as saying that some of the oil may ultimately be packaged into small bottles for foreign sales.
