BIDEN DROPS OUT OF PRESIDENTIAL RACE AMID PRESSURE FROM FELLOW DEMOCRATS
July 21, 2024 (Washington, D.C.) – Today Joe Biden released a statement on social media to announce he was dropping out of the Presidential race against former President Trump and his newly announced Vice Presidential running mate JD Vance.
The President stated, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
It is uncertain at this time what it will mean for democrats going into the DNC next month. Biden has publicly stated support of Kamala but do Democrats have another candidate in mind that might have a better ability to beat trump? We don’t know yet. One thing is for certain, this race isn’t over yet.
MSN reported, “Ousting a presumptive nominee at convention would have been an uphill battle, but with Biden now out of the race, the path to find a nominee is clear. It will be done via delegates.”
The article states, “In order for a candidate to become the official nominee of the Democratic Party, they need to win the majority of the delegates. With Biden out of the running, delegates would not be pledged to vote for anyone — states’ laws and party rules make it difficult for delegates to vote for a candidate who did not win the primary unless they are released. With the delegates released, the campaigning will begin.”
Several names have been mentioned as possible contenders such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Bill and Hillary Clinton went to X to post their support for Joe’s service and to endorse
Kamala Harris as the nominee. The Clinton post reads,” President Biden has capped his extraordinary career of service with a Presidency that has lifted America out of an unprecedented pandemic, created millions of new jobs, rebuilt a battered economy, strengthened our democracy, and restored our standing in the world. By any measure, he has advanced our founders' charge to build a more perfect union and his own stated goal of restoring the soul of our nation.
We join millions of Americans in thanking President Biden for all he has accomplished, standing up for America time and again, with his North Star always being what's best for the country.
We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her.”
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that Biden "put the country, his party, and our future first" and praised him by saying, “Joe, today shows you are a true patriot and great American,”
Congressional Black Caucus chairman Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., and CBC political action committee chairman Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., said they join Biden in “fully supporting” Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee. “She has been instrumental in delivering the accomplishments of the last 3.5 years and has led on lowering maternal mortality rates, protecting reproductive freedoms, and ensuring economic opportunities for all," they said in a joint statement. "She will do an excellent job as President of the United States."
Kamala Harris released her own statement thanking President Biden for his support and said, "My intention is to earn and win this nomination," Harris said. "I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda."
Donald trump also took to social media to respond to the reports of Biden stepping down stated, “"Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President and is certainly not fit to serve - And never was! He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement," he wrote. "All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t.'
"We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly," he concluded. 'MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
