SANTEE’S CITY CLERK LEAVES JOB FOR COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY; ASSISTANT OFFERED JOB

September 17, 2024  (Santee) -- Annette Fagan Ortiz, Santee’s City Clerk since 2018, resigned from her job to take a similar position with the San Diego County Airport Authority.

The Santee City Council is offering the now vacant position to James Jeffries, the assistant city clerk since 2020 who is now serving as the interim City Clerk, said Mayor John Minto.

“We were sorry to see her go,” Minto said of Ortiz, a native of the South Bay. “She was looking for another place and someplace that would pay more, another opportunity that pays better. So good for her.”

Minto said it wasn’t necessary to conduct an outside search for a replacement clerk as Jeffries has been doing the job capably and that city employees work as a team so he’s ready to pick up the reins.

“We’ve made him an offer and he’s accepted,” Minto said. He would not disclose Jeffries’ salary but this year he is making $92,712. The issue will come before the City Council at its next meeting on Sept. 25.

Ortiz’s most recent salary was $151,310. A call to Ortiz was not returned.

City clerks serve as the official record keepers for agencies, preparing and executing documents covering city decisions, including ordinances and resolutions; complying with all federal, state and local laws pertaining to public bodies including the election process; providing pubic transparency on actions by the city; and providing administrative support to the City Council and City Manager.
